Los Angeles Spousal Support Attorneys
Experienced Alimony Attorneys Ready for Negotiation or Trial
There is a moment in nearly every divorce when the financial reality becomes undeniable. One spouse recognizes that years out of the workforce, a career redirected, or opportunities passed up might have left them at a financial disadvantage. The other questions what ongoing support is fair when their own financial life is also being divided and rebuilt.
Provinziano & Associates is a boutique family law firm in Los Angeles specializing in spousal support representation on both sides of the matter. Our spousal support attorneys handle everything from initial requests, modifications, and enforcement to contesting, limiting, or defending against claims and orders the other side is pursuing.
We help clients prepare the financial records and legal arguments courts review when deciding temporary or long-term support handling cases at every level of complexity, from cooperative agreements to high-asset, highly contested hearings and negotiated settlements.
As a California spousal support law firm with 100 years of combined experience, we advocate for outcomes that reflect the financial reality you’re living now, including need, ability to pay, and each spouse’s contributions.
Call Provinziano & Associates at (310) 820-3500 to speak with a Los Angeles spousal support attorney about your case.
What Is Spousal Support in California?
Spousal support, also called alimony or spousal maintenance, is a court-ordered payment from one spouse or domestic partner to the other. It is usually ordered in divorce, legal separation, or domestic partnership dissolution cases when one person needs time to regain financial stability and the other has the ability to pay.
California courts may order temporary support while the case is pending or long-term support after the final judgment. Temporary support helps address immediate financial needs during the case.
Long-term support is decided later, after the court reviews the full financial picture and the legal factors California law requires it to consider.
Call Provinziano & Associates at (310) 820-3500 to speak with a Los Angeles spousal support team. Your case evaluation is free.
Los Angeles Spousal Support Lawyers For Those Paying and Those Receiving
Every spousal support case starts with one thing: your story. The decisions you made, the roles you played, and the lifestyle you want to live now.
At Provinziano & Associates, we handle spousal support matters at every stage and in every form: initial requests, temporary orders, long-term support determinations, modifications, enforcement, and termination.
We build support positions grounded in the financial records and legal arguments courts rely on to decide these issues.
Our experienced spousal support lawyers help clients:
Request the Spousal Support You Need to Start Over
You paused your career, scaled back, or you never started one, because the plan was to keep the family grounded while your spouse built something outside the home. You kept the household running, raised the children, and created the conditions that made everything else possible.
We help clients like you pursue support that reflects the value of those contributions and the life you helped build.
Oppose Support Requests That Overstate Need or Income
You spent years working long hours, taking financial risks, or shouldering the pressure that came with being the provider. Now you are being asked to continue that support in a new context, at a level that does not reflect what you actually earn or what you can reasonably pay.
Our spousal support lawyers work with clients in your position to review support demands, challenge overreach, and propose solutions that are grounded in your actual income and obligations.
Challenge Claims That Don’t Add Up
Sometimes the numbers presented to the court do not match reality. Income gets understated. Lifestyle gets overstated. The picture of what each spouse earned, spent, or contributed gets shaped to favor one side.
Our firm works with forensic accountants and valuation experts to investigate misleading claims and bring accurate facts before the court.
Enforce Unpaid Spousal Support
When payments stop, the impact is immediate. Rent, utilities, and basic expenses do not pause because a spouse decided to stop paying.
A support order is enforceable. Our firm helps clients pursue wage assignment, contempt proceedings, and other remedies designed to collect what is owed and protect the order already in place.
Address Spousal Support in International Cases
When one spouse lives abroad, earns income in another country, or holds assets outside the United States, spousal support becomes more complex.
Establishing what a foreign spouse earns, enforcing a California order across borders, or seeking recognition of a foreign support order in California each requires a different approach than a domestic matter.
We represent clients in spousal support disputes with an international dimension, including cases involving foreign income, overseas assets, and cross-border enforcement questions.
Modify Support After a Significant Change
What made sense at the time of the divorce may no longer reflect your life today. A job loss, a change in income, retirement, remarriage, or a major shift in either spouse’s financial situation can affect whether the original support order still works.
We help clients seek or oppose modification of spousal support orders. That may mean asking for a lower payment, requesting more support, challenging a reduction request, or addressing whether support should continue, change, or end because one spouse was expected to become self-supporting over time.
I started out asking for an alimony reduction, but Provinziano & Associates got it fully terminated. Communication was strong throughout, and I was extremely satisfied with the result.
EDD, Spousal Support Client
Spousal Support Overview
Spousal support exists to address financial imbalance during or after divorce, legal separation, or domestic partnership dissolution. It is not a punishment for one spouse or a reward for the other. Courts look at whether one spouse or partner needs support, whether the other has the ability to pay, and what support would be fair under California law.
Either spouse may request support, and either spouse may be ordered to pay. Spousal support is not based on gender. Whether support is appropriate, and in what amount, depends on the specific financial circumstances of each spouse and the factors required to be weighed by the courts.
Support can take different forms. Periodic payments, typically monthly, are the most common. Spouses can also agree privately to a lump-sum payment or a property transfer in lieu of ongoing support.
To become binding, any private agreement must be submitted to the court, which will review it to confirm the terms are fair and not the product of duress or incomplete disclosure.
How California Courts Decide Spousal Support
Temporary support and long-term support are calculated differently in California. Temporary support may be estimated with guideline formulas or certified support calculator software while the case is pending.
Long-term support is decided at judgment and is not based on one fixed formula. Judges look at California Family Code section 4320 factors, such as need, ability to pay, earning capacity, marital lifestyle, marriage length, health, assets, debts, and each spouse’s ability to become self-supporting.
How much spousal support you can receive or may have to pay depends on these factors.
How Long Does Support Last and When Can It Change?
For marriages under 10 years, California courts often use half the length of the marriage as a starting point for how long support may last. For marriages of 10 years or longer, the court usually does not have to set a specific end date right away. That does not mean support lasts forever. It means the court may keep the power to review, change, reduce, or end support later based on the facts.
Support may later change if major facts change. That can include job loss, retirement, remarriage, cohabitation, a major income change, the end of child support, or a dispute over whether one spouse has had enough time to become self-supporting.
Our Los Angeles spousal support attorneys help clients present their side with the records, strategy, and evidence the court needs to evaluate. We handle support disputes involving regular wages, variable income, business income, bonuses, commissions, unemployment, underemployment, disputed earning capacity, and claims that one spouse is not earning what they reasonably could.
Spousal support law sets the framework. Your financial picture, your marriage, and your circumstances determine what it means for your case. Call us to find out where you stand.
Whether you are seeking support or responding to a request, the facts of your situation determine your options. Call us at (310) 820-3500 to talk through where you stand.
The Provinziano & Associates Difference
What Sets Our Los Angeles Spousal Support Law Firm Apart
Support Strategy That Looks Beyond the Monthly Number
Spousal support can affect more than this month’s payment. It can shape housing, business cash flow, retirement planning, settlement terms, and the financial pressure each spouse carries after divorce. We build support positions with the long-term impact in mind, so the order does not solve one problem while creating another.
Led by a Certified Family Law Specialist
Spousal support disputes can involve contested income, earning capacity arguments, long-term financial planning, and courtroom litigation. Alphonse Provinziano holds the Certified Family Law Specialist designation from the State Bar of California, awarded to attorneys who meet rigorous experience and examination requirements. That credential carries weight in cases where the financial and legal stakes are highest.
When Income, Lifestyle, and Ability to Pay Are Disputed, We Go Deeper
A paycheck does not always tell the full story. When support involves business income, variable earnings, bonuses, commissions, or questions about what a spouse is capable of earning, we work with forensic accountants, business valuators, and tax professionals to make sure the income figure before the court reflects reality.
Negotiation When Possible, Litigation When Needed
We work to resolve spousal support disputes through negotiation when possible, but we are prepared to litigate when agreement is not. With more than 3,800 Los Angeles County courtroom appearances, Provinziano & Associates brings both settlement strategy and courtroom readiness to support cases, so your position is built for either outcome.
Discretion With Sensitive Financial and Personal Details
Spousal support cases can expose tax returns, business records, income history, health issues, spending patterns, and private family details. While some court records may be public, we are careful about how information is collected, shared, filed, and presented so your case is handled with the discretion it deserves.

Frequently Asked Questions
Alimony in California
How long do you have to be married to get alimony in California?
There’s no minimum time you must be married to get alimony in California, but the longer you were married, the more likely the court is to award longer-term support. Marriages under 10 years are generally treated as short-term, with support lasting about half the length of the marriage. Marriages of 10 years or more may qualify for longer support, depending on other factors like income, earning capacity, and marital standard of living.
What disqualifies you from alimony in California?
In California, alimony (spousal support) may be reduced or denied in certain cases. Certain criminal convictions can affect spousal support, but the effect depends on the offense and timing. Some qualifying felony convictions can prohibit an award to the convicted spouse, while certain domestic violence misdemeanor convictions create a rebuttable presumption against support.
A valid premarital or marital agreement may also limit or waive support if it is enforceable.
How much alimony will I get in California?
There’s no set formula for long-term spousal support in California. The amount depends on factors like the length of the marriage, each spouse’s income and expenses, and the standard of living during the marriage. Judges also consider earning ability, age, health, and whether one spouse helped the other’s career. For temporary support (while the case is pending), courts in Los Angeles often use a guideline formula, but final support is based on what’s fair.
Are there alternatives to monthly spousal support in California?
When does spousal support end?
Is spousal support the same as alimony?
Spousal support and alimony generally mean the same thing. In California, courts usually use the term “spousal support,” while many people still use “alimony” to describe payments from one spouse or domestic partner to the other during or after divorce, legal separation, or domestic partnership dissolution.
