Los Angeles Spousal Support Attorneys

Fighting for Fair Spousal Support, No Matter Which Side You’re On

There’s a moment in nearly every divorce when things start to feel real.

It might come as you sit down with a spreadsheet, or as you picture life in a different home.

No matter what it looked like, both of you helped shape what you built together. And now, that shared life must shift—each of you starting over.

Spousal support (alimony) is one part of that process. It’s about recognizing how your lives were built together, and helping each person carry on without losing the life they worked hard to build or sacrificed for.

I started out asking for an alimony reduction but Provinziano & Associates got it fully terminated. Communication was strong throughout, and I was extremely satisfied with the result.

Los Angeles Spousal Support Attorneys

At Provinziano & Associates, we work with clients throughout Los Angeles who are living through this shift. People stepping into new independence, and people being asked to help support it.

As a California divorce and spousal support law firm, we advocate for outcomes that reflect your contributions and the financial reality you’re living now. Whether you’re seeking support or facing a request, our alimony attorneys develop legal strategies that connect the facts to what’s fair.

How Our Los Angeles Alimony Attorneys Can Help You

Every spousal support case starts with one thing: your story. The decisions you made, the roles you played, and the lifestyle you want to live now.

At Provinziano & Associates, we start with those facts.

We handle every stage of the spousal support process—from initial requests to post-judgment modifications. Whether you’re seeking support, responding to a demand, or challenging terms that no longer reflect your reality, our alimony lawyers have the experience to turn the facts of your case into a strategy the court will take seriously.

Pursue the Spousal Support You Need to Start Over Strong

Maybe you paused your career. Maybe you never started one because the plan was to keep the family grounded while your spouse built something outside the home.

You might have supported a business not by working in it, but by creating the stability that made growth possible: raising children, managing relocations, keeping the household running when the hours got long.

Our experienced spousal support attorneys help clients like you pursue support that reflects the value of those contributions and the life you helped build.

Push Back on Alimony That Goes Too Far

You may have spent years working long hours, taking financial risks, or shouldering the pressure that came with being the provider.

Now, you’re being asked to continue that support in a new context—one that asks more than what’s fair, given everything you’ve already shouldered.

Our experienced alimony lawyers work with clients in your position to review support demands, challenge overreach, and propose solutions that are grounded in your actual income and obligations.

Challenge Claims That Don’t Add Up

Our firm works with forensic accountants and valuation experts to investigate inflated or misleading claims. As experienced California spousal support lawyers, we know what to look for—and how to bring those facts forward in court.

Adjust Support When Life Changes

Life doesn’t stand still. Careers shift. Health changes. Financial needs evolve. What made sense at the time of divorce might no longer work today.

Whether you’re paying support or receiving it, you have the right to ask for a modification when your circumstances change. That might mean seeking a reduction after a loss in income or requesting more support if the original amount no longer meets your needs.

If your income changes, your ex remarries, or circumstances shift, we’ll help you file for spousal support modification. Our Los Angeles spousal support attorneys handle both increases and reductions, always with the goal of getting the numbers right.

Frequently Asked Questions
on Alimony in California

What is spousal support in California?
Spousal support, also called alimony, is a court-ordered payment from one spouse to the other after separation or divorce in California. Its purpose is to help the lower-earning spouse maintain a similar standard of living and become self-supporting. Support can be temporary (while the case is pending) or long-term, depending on factors like the length of the marriage, income, and needs of each spouse.
There’s no minimum time you must be married to get alimony in California, but the longer you were married, the more likely the court is to award longer-term support. Marriages under 10 years are generally treated as short-term, with support lasting about half the length of the marriage. Marriages of 10 years or more may qualify for longer or indefinite support, depending on other factors like income, earning capacity, and marital standard of living.
In California, alimony (spousal support) may be reduced or denied in certain cases. A conviction for domestic violence by the spouse seeking support can make them ineligible. A valid prenuptial or postnuptial agreement may also waive the right to support, but only if it meets legal requirements. Adultery usually does not affect alimony, since California is a no-fault divorce state.

There’s no set formula for long-term spousal support in California. The amount depends on factors like the length of the marriage, each spouse’s income and expenses, and the standard of living during the marriage. Judges also consider earning ability, age, health, and whether one spouse helped the other’s career. For temporary support (while the case is pending), courts in Los Angeles often use a guideline formula, but final support is based on what’s fair.

Yes. In California, spouses can agree to alternatives to monthly spousal support payments, such as a lump sum buyout or a property transfer. A lump sum payment involves one spouse paying a fixed amount up front to settle future support obligations. In some cases, spouses may agree to transfer property instead of paying ongoing support. These options must be negotiated, documented in a written agreement, and approved by the court to be valid. Always consult with a family law attorney to ensure any alternative arrangement is legally sound and enforceable.
