International Divorce & Family Law for the UK and California
Serving UK–California families in cross-border divorce and all related cases
Living across two worlds comes with its own challenges. You’re navigating two court systems, two sets of legal rules, and two very different views on parenting, money, and what fairness looks like when a relationship ends. Every decision you make, from where to file to when to act, and who to turn to for advice, can shape your rights, your finances, and your future on both sides of the Atlantic.
Provinziano & Associates is a Beverly Hills family law firm that focuses on California and the United Kingdom cases. Led by Certified Family Law Specialist and International Academy of Family Lawyers Fellow Alphonse Provinziano, we represent parents, executives, entrepreneurs, and other professionals whose relationships, children, and assets are tied to both places.
Our role is to help you understand your options in each country, set clear goals, and build a plan that reflects both the legal realities and the life you are trying to protect.
From international parental child abduction and relocation disputes to cross-border support enforcement and recognition of foreign divorce and financial orders, we help people with ties to both the UK and California address high-stakes issues involving their children, income, property, businesses, and long-term financial security when more than one legal system is involved.
Who We Serve
We represent UK citizens living in California, California residents with ties to the UK, and expats whose families, assets, finances, or careers span both countries.
Our clients include professionals, business owners, and parents navigating cross-border issues like:
- Divorce or separation involving property or income in both the UK and California
- Custody, relocation, or child support for dual-national children
- Disputes over which country’s court should decide the case
- Concerns that the wrong jurisdiction could lead to unfair or irreversible outcomes
We also work with English-speaking clients from select British Commonwealth jurisdictions, such as Bermuda, the British Virgin Islands, and the Cayman Islands, when their family or financial issues connect to California or the United Kingdom.
What UK Clients Should Know About California Family Law
Residency comes first. To file for divorce in California, at least one spouse must have lived in the state for 6 months and in the specific county for 3 months. If you don’t meet this requirement yet, you can either wait or file for legal separation in the meantime.
Expect a much more intensive process when it comes to finances. California courts often demand full disclosure of income, assets, spending, and lifestyle.
Support is formula-driven with guidelines to calculate spousal and child support, while assets acquired during the marriage are split equally, regardless of whose name is on it, unless they qualify as separate property.
If you’re coming from a UK mindset, this system can feel unfamiliar, but it also opens doors to different kinds of arguments. Knowing how to frame your case for a California court early on can help give you an advantage.
How Our UK-California International Divorce Lawyers Help You
We handle international family law cases from start to finish, whether you’re just thinking about divorce, already in court, or dealing with orders that no longer work. We help you understand how the UK and California systems affect your case and guide you in protecting your children, income, and property.
Forum Choice: Which Country Should Deal With Your Case
Jurisdiction is about which country’s court can deal with your divorce, finances, and arrangements for children. Sometimes, only one court has the authority to act. In other cases, different courts may handle different parts of the case, for example, divorce in one country and child arrangements or financial enforcement in the other.
Our role is to weigh these options early with trusted UK counsel so that any decision about where to proceed is a deliberate one.
International UK-California Divorce and Separation
Whether the case is high-conflict or amicable, we guide clients from initial filings through final judgment, or step in mid-case when needed. We handle high-asset and business divorce, military and LGBTQ+ matters, legal separation, annulments, and domestic partnerships.
Our work includes cross-border service, coordinated financial disclosure across systems, urgent hearings, and collaboration with UK solicitors and barristers.
We also handle appeals and post-judgment modifications in complex, multi-jurisdictional matters.
Child Support Across the UK & California
Cross-border child support must make sense for both households and hold up under the laws of both countries.
We help parents ask for, challenge, or change support orders when income, living costs, or a child’s needs shift across countries. That includes dealing with hidden income, complex pay like bonuses or equity, and long support histories that span both systems.
Our focus is on making sure the child has what they need, and that support orders are fair, realistic, and enforceable in both places.
Spousal Support (Alimony) and Maintenance
We represent clients seeking, contesting, or modifying spousal support. That includes temporary support during the case and longer-term maintenance after final judgment.
For those seeking support, we show the court why it’s justified. For those defending against claims, we challenge inflated numbers and push for realistic, sustainable terms.
Income, assets, and your shared history can be viewed differently in each country. We use the right legal tools, such as the Uniform Interstate Family Support Act (UIFSA) and registering foreign orders, so that support decisions are fair and enforceable where both of you live and earn.
Children, Parental Rights, and the Hague Convention
For most parents, nothing matters more than their children. We handle custody and parentage cases involving the UK and California, including temporary, emergency, and long-term orders.
Child Custody Between the UK and California — We represent parents on both sides of cross-border disputes about where a child lives, who makes key decisions, and how parenting time is shared. We build a clear case that shows how your child’s life will work under your care, and seek orders that protect your role and their stability.
The Hague Convention and Child Abduction — If a child is taken or kept without proper consent, we represent parents seeking a return under the Hague Convention, as well as those defending against return applications. We coordinate closely with UK and U.S. counsel and the authorities to handle evidence, timelines, and court strategy from the start.
Relocation and International Move-Aways — If a parent wants to move a child to another country or state, or stop a move, we step in early. We advise parents before relocation plans are set and handle international move-away cases on either side of the Atlantic.
Marital Property and Asset Division in UK-California Cases
We help international families divide complex cross-border asset portfolios, whether that means homes in both countries, complex investments, or high-value business interests.
Our clients include business owners, founders, partners in professional practices, public figures, and heirs, often with pensions, crypto assets, investment portfolios, stock and option grants, and real estate in multiple jurisdictions.
Our goal is to level the playing field and ensure any final settlement or judgment reflects full and accurate financial information.
Business Valuation
We identify what exists, where it is held, and what it is worth, working with valuation experts and forensic accountants when needed to build a detailed financial picture grounded in evidence.
This ensures that every negotiation or court proceeding is based on real numbers rather than estimates.
Asset Tracing & Hidden Assets
In some cases, money may have been moved between accounts, companies, or countries in ways that make the true picture hard to see.
We review records, work with experts, and use court tools to trace assets through companies, trusts, and overseas holdings, so that the pool for division reflects what is really there.
Enforcement and Cross-Border Orders
A court order only matters if it can be enforced where people, assets, and income actually are. We help enforce California orders abroad and foreign orders here.
We also manage the practical details: certified translations, apostilles, service of process, and coordination across legal teams. If a spouse hides income, moves assets, or evades service, we use court remedies and cross-border cooperation, and where the law allows, we ask the court to order a contribution to your legal fees.
Prenuptial and Postnuptial Agreements
For couples whose lives run between California and the United Kingdom, a prenup or postnup is often the main tool for setting expectations about property and support. We draft, negotiate, and review these agreements and update existing documents when careers, children, or holdings have changed.
Where needed, we arrange mirror agreements or related orders so that what you agree on paper is more likely to be recognized in both countries.
How We Work With UK Counsel
In UK-related cases, we do not attempt to substitute ourselves for UK solicitors or barristers. Instead, we collaborate. We handle the California side and work with trusted UK solicitors and barristers, so you are not left coordinating between firms on your own.
From the outset, we build a shared understanding of your situation with the UK team, then agree which court should move first and who will take which steps.
Through our international network, we also coordinate with lawyers in British Commonwealth jurisdictions, including Bermuda, the British Virgin Islands, and the Cayman Islands, when those systems need to be part of a California or UK strategy.

The Provinziano & Associates Difference
Certified and Recognized International Family Law Leadership
Your case is led by a California Certified Family Law Specialist who is also a Fellow of the International Academy of Family Lawyers. That means your strategy is shaped by someone who focuses on family law every day and works regularly with lawyers in England and Wales and other UK jurisdictions. He is regularly featured in outlets such as Bloomberg Law and Fortune on difficult divorce and family law issues, reflecting the level of insight we bring to high asset and international UK-California cases.
Strategic Collaboration Network of Cross-Border Professionals
International family cases often raise questions that sit outside pure family law. We draw on a circle of wealth managers, estate planning lawyers, financial planners, tax specialists, business valuation experts, and forensic accountants in both countries so that decisions about structure, liquidity, and succession are made with proper input, not guesswork. When you already have trusted advisors, we coordinate with your existing team and align our legal strategy with theirs, so you are not left managing the moving parts on your own.
Built for High-Asset Divorce and Global Enforcement
We regularly deal with portfolios that include companies, professional practices, pensions, crypto, investments, and property on both sides of the Atlantic. From valuation and division to hidden assets, support arrears, and mirror orders, we think about enforceability and long-term impact from the start, not just the day a judgment is signed.
Discreet Counsel for High-Profile International Clients
Many of our clients are business owners, professionals, public figures, athletes, and heirs. We handle sensitive matters as quietly and privately as the law allows, manage public filings and media interest, and, when needed, coordinate with trusted PR and security advisors so that your legal strategy does not come at the expense of your privacy.
Compassionate Support Throughout Your Case
Family law cases are personal and can feel draining. In court, we are firm and strategic. With clients, we work to be steady and attentive. We explain each step in plain language, prepare you for hearings and deadlines, and make space for the stress that comes with decisions about children, money, and reputation, while keeping our focus on practical steps that protect your position.
Litigation & Appeals Experience in Complex UK–California Family Law
International matters do not always settle. Our team has represented clients in thousands of court proceedings and has handled appeals and post-judgment modifications in difficult support, custody, and property cases, so the skill set for a hard-fought hearing is already in place if you need it.
Trusted by International Lawyers for Insight
Our cross-border experience has made us a go-to resource for international lawyers handling complex UK-California family matters. Overseas solicitors and barristers regularly consult with our team on forum strategy, jurisdictional conflicts, enforcement options, and coordinated filings, trusting us to guide sensitive, high-value cases involving dual systems.
Staying Ahead of Cross-Border Legal Strategy
Our attorneys attend advanced programs through international forums focused on UK-California work. Managing Partner Alphonse Provinziano regularly speaks at events such as IAFL conferences and the Across Borders Alliance of Lawyers, and often joins working dinners with overseas colleagues. This emphasis on staying up to date on jurisdiction, enforcement, and cross-border strategy feeds straight back into the advice we give on real cases.
